The American Homestead Company is a company established for the purpose of designing and building custom development projects in the Telluride, Colorado area. AHC has mastered the use of old buildings circa 1780-1890 for the nucleus of their building designs. AHC started with the concept of using 19th century structures in 1996. This process starts with the location of an antique building, such as a log cabin, barn, gristmill, stone building, silo, etc. We start with the building pad and research our inventory for the ideal structures that will form the nucleus of our design, and incorporate them into the footprint. Depending on what is available our design grows out of this process.

AHC has established a reliable network of pickers in the field throughout the U.S.A. and Canada. This network establishes the connection straight to the sellers of these buildings, and allows AHC to look at and purchase only the finest quality historic structures available. This network in the US is very small and AHC’s business practices have created a strong and trusted relationship in the antique building and salvage network.

We look for specific species of wood, size of the material (face, width, and depth of the logs), quality of the buildings and specific designs. The key to our success is selecting buildings that can handle our snow loads in the Telluride region. We also make every attempt to uncover the history of the structure(s)and its past inhabitants and provide any documents procured in this search to our clients.

Our buildings are tagged, numbered, photographed, and a schematic drawing is produced. Unacceptable pieces are replaced with sound pieces that match. The entire building is then pressure washed and fumigated. The cabins and barns will then be reconstructed on site with all the modern day standards to meet contemporary building codes.

Another important member of the AHC team is our Colorado licensed engineer, Michael Erlich. Michael and AHC’s extensive experience with this type of construction process have created efficiencies that allow these buildings to maintain their structural integrity. We have become the leader in Green building with the use of antique buildings, antique wood products, antique stone, and antique architectural pieces.
